( Ramras talk): Associated to any finitely generated discrete group there is a topological bipermutative category consisting of (finite dimensional) unitary representations and intertwining maps. The K-theory ring spectrum associated to this category admits a ring map to topological K-theory, generalizing in a very explicit manner the well-known Atiyah-Segal construction associating vector bundles to representations. I'll discuss some general features of this theory and its connections to the (strong) Novikov conjecture and Chern-Simons theory. |
